Chiang Mai has long been known as Thailand's City of Handicrafts and San kampaeng District of Chiang Mai is a paradise for crafts lovers.

This half day tour from Chiang Mai takes you to visit the worlds largest gem collection, the famous Shinawatra silk company, the hand made umbrella factory, lacquerware, bronze goods, leather goods, Siam Celadon pottery and much, much more. At each stop you'll be treated to a tour of the factory watching the craftsmen as they work, before having the opportunity to shop at bargain prices in the stores. Arguably the highlight is the umbrella factory, where beautiful umbrellas are hand made through traditional methods.

  • Day 1: Sankampaeng Handicraft Village

Many of the very best handicrafts in all of Thailand are produced right here in the North. You will visit a number of workshops and factories where these Northern handicrafts are made, from along Sankampaeng Road to the village of Bo Sang.  Bo Sang is known as the umbrella-making village, and here you will see how we make ‘saa' paper from mulberry trees, and make a wide range of products from it, including the village's famous painted umbrellas. On the way back to Chiang Mai, there is a myriad of other handicraft industries to visit and see including silk and cotton weaving, lacquer ware, silverware, teak wood furniture carving, gems and jewellery, ceramics and pottery. At the workshops you will see demonstrations of how these products are made, with showrooms of their products.
